Fall Market Days; Board seeks applicants; Senior Center October Events
Market Days Fall Festival scheduled for Oct. 12

Yorktown Market Days will extend its hours on Saturday, Oct. 12, to celebrate autumn with a Fall Festival.
Typically held from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., this Market Days event will extend its hours to 3 p.m. and will include children's activities, hayrides, a pumpkin patch and hay maze, and live musical entertainment.
Members of Runaway String Band are scheduled to perform until 3 p.m.
The schedule for this special Market Days/Fall Festival will be:
• Market Days vendors and Local Artists open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• Children's Hay Maze (sponsored by Ben & Jerry's) 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• Pumpkin Patch 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• Entertainment by Runaway String Band 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• Chef Demonstrations by Riverwalk Restaurant 9:30 a.m. & 11 a.m.
• Children's Inflatable Crawl & Activities 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• Hayrides 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The market features seasonal fruits and vegetables; fresh seafood; eggs, poultry, beef and pork; fresh breads and baked goods; organic and gluten free products; coffee, jams and jellies; pumpkins, mums, gourds, potted plants and much more. Free parking will be available at the market in several public parking areas throughout Historic Yorktown. The free Yorktown trolley runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

York Supervisors Seek Applicants for Williamsburg Regional Library Board of Trustees

The York County Board of Supervisors recently executed an agreement with the Williamsburg Regional Library (WRL) for the provision of library services to York County residents in the upper part of the County. This contract provides for the County to have a member serving on the WRL Board of Trustees.
The Library Board of Trustees meets at 3:30 p.m. on the 4th Wednesday of each month with the exception of a combined November/December meeting to be held December 4 this year. Approximately 2-3 hours a month is required by Trustees to prepare for and attend meetings.
Duties of the Trustees include: hire the library's director and evaluate the director's performance on an annual basis; review and approve a budget for library operations; oversee expenditures of library funds, facilities, and equipment; establish and review library policies; regularly attend meetings of the Board of Trustees and visit other libraries when possible; and, become familiar with library issues at the state and local level and advocate for library support.
York County citizens interested in applying for appointment to the Williamsburg Regional Library Board of Trustees may obtain an application at the County Administrator's Office at 224 Ballard Street in Yorktown, or by calling 890-3320. Applications may also be obtained and filed by using the County website. Enter the county's website at www.yorkcounty.gov, select "On-Line Services," and then "Board Bank Application."
Senior Center of York Announces October Events

A variety of educational and entertaining programs are being offered at the Senior Center of York in October. Participation is open to seniors age 55 or better and their spouses, regardless of age. The Center is located in the Washington Square Shopping Center at 5314 George Washington Memorial Highway (Rte. 17), and is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Center is closed all County Holidays. Reservations are required for all sessions and are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. To register, stop by the Center or call 898-3807. Flu Shot Registration, Tuesday, October 1 Beginning at 9 a.m. Remember to mark your calendars to register for your annual flu shot. Please call 898-3807 or stop by the Senior Center at 5314 George Washington Memorial Highway to reserve a time slot for your free shot. Time slots will be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis, and York County residents will have priority. The flu shots will be administered on Friday, October 16 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. No fee or Medicare billing will be involved.
Senior Center of York 2013 Annual Fundraiser, Saturday, October 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This annual special event includes a white elephant sale, bake sale, craft fair, and prize drawings. Please bring in your donated goods (except for clothing) to the Center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Please also tag items with suggested prices. Limited pickup may be available for anyone wishing to donate larger items. Prepackaged bake sale items may be delivered Friday, October 11 or on the day of the event at 8:30 a.m. Note: Bake sale items must not require refrigeration or heating. And again, food items must already be packaged and ready for sale when delivered to the Center. Scrapbooking & Greeting Cards, Monday, October 14 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Join us as Cathy Fowler of Creative Memories shows how to make beautiful cards and assists you with your scrapbook. These cards and your personalized scrapbook create lasting memories and make wonderful gifts for loved ones. Note: Please limit to four cards. Please register at the Center's front desk for this program.
"Caring for You, Caring For Me," Tuesday, October 15 at 1:30 p.m. This program is modeled after the Roslyn Carter Institute for Caregiving: "Caring For You, Caring For Me Education and Support Program." The program brings family, volunteer, and professional caregivers together to discuss a variety of topics including: coping mechanisms; exchanging ideas; learning about a wide range of resources; and, identifying key concerns and ways to work together to enhance the quality of life for their care recipients and themselves as caregivers. Dr. Christine Jensen, Director of Health Services Research at the Riverside Center for Excellence in Aging and Lifelong Health, will give an overview. If you are currently serving in a caregiver role, we encourage you to come and learn more about this program. To register call the Senior Center at 898-3807 by October 15.
Culture Day, "Grave Mistakes" Wednesday, October 16 at 1 p.m. Author Aleck Loker will speak to us about the evidence and archaeological clues for the first humans in America, actually found right here in Virginia, and how these pertain to his thriller novel "Grave Mistakes!" This novel is set in Williamsburg and rural Tidewater Virginia and explores the new theory of generations of people of the New World 18,000 years ago. The story then transitions into a modern day murder mystery with a twist of unanticipated bravery. Please register by calling the Senior Center at 898-3807.
Pumpkin Designs, Monday, October 21 at 10 a.m. Enjoy creating a variety of pumpkin designs with York County Master Gardeners Jill Schuff and Pam Camblin. Your pumpkin will look great inside or outdoors just in time for Halloween. Please register at the Senior Center of York by calling 898-3807 by Thursday, October 17 so we can have enough pumpkins on hand. Space is limited.
International Day, Friday, October 25 at 11:30 a.m. In honor of United Nations Day, come celebrate our diversity with a variety of cuisines. Wear a cultural costume and be entered into a contest to win a prize. Lunch will be served at 12 noon. The fee for this event is $3 and should be paid at the time of registration. Registration is open through Wednesday, October 23 or until space is full, so please sign up at the front desk or call 898-3807 to reserve your spot.
AARP Driver Safety Program, Monday, October 28 and Tuesday, October 29. This program is designed for drivers age 50 or better, and will take place on Monday, October 28 from 12:30 to 4:45 p.m. and Tuesday, October 29 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. The cost for this two-day program is $12 for members of AARP and $14 for non-members. Fees should be paid by check and made out to AARP. Class registration may be made in person at the Senior Center, by phone, or by mail. Note: AARP membership, which cannot be processed the day of a class, is not required for class registration. There is no "behind the wheel" driving performed in this program. Drivers age 55 or better must attend both classes to receive the state mandated three-year automobile insurance reduction. Many insurance companies are giving insurance reductions to drivers age 50+ with the same attendance requirements. Those less than age 55 should check with their insurance company to see if they are entitled to the three-year insurance reduction. Class enrollment is limited to 25.
Health Day, "Medicare Check-up" Wednesday, October 30 at 12:45 p.m. Each year Medicare Part D Plans may have cost and coverage changes, so it is important that you review your plan during the open enrollment period that begins October 15 and continues through December 7. Lisa Walker with the Virginia Insurance Counseling Assistance Program will give an overview of 2014 changes and answer your questions on Medicare and Medicare Part D. She will also discuss benefit programs you may be eligible for to help pay Medicare deductibles and premiums. The Virginia Insurance Counseling and Assistance Program (VICAP) is a free program that assists consumers with medical benefit issues with Medicare, Medicaid, medical bill paying and long-term care insurance. Registration for this program concludes on October 28, so be sure to call the Senior Center at 898-3807.
Computers and General Use. The computers are available for general use Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. unless the lab is reserved for programmed activities. Please note classes are held in the lab on Tuesdays. To use the computers you must sign in at the Senior Center front desk.
